Tonight on Life Size Radio, we talked about the “real women” debate. We often hear plus-size women being called “real,” but is that fair to women who are NOT plus?

I personally don’t think that the terminology is particularly insulting or unfair, when used in the proper context. We represent the majority, but we’re hardly represented in the mainstream. Day-to-day, I see far more women who are curvy, strong, or simply taller and big-boned than I see smaller women, but that’s not the case on the internet, in my magazines, or on television. It’s about being inclusive, not exclusive. Clearly we’re all real, but some of us have been treated like second-class citizens, especially in the fashion world. Let’s play fair! It’s our turn, finally.

I'm not allowed to call fat girls fat, but it's ok for people to say things like "these size 16 women are REAL women!" I'm a small person. I can't help it. Don't say I'm not a real woman because of it. I can wear a size 00, but it doesn't mean I'm too thin. It just depends on the brand of clothing, because sometimes I'm a size 4. Big deal! I guess my question is, why is there such a double standard? It's the new "big thing" to have "real women" on the covers of magazines, but those "real women" are just plus sized models. They're still airbrushed; the only difference between those girls and the girls they usually have on magazine covers is that they're fatter. That's supposed to make people feel better? I think we need to NOT glamorize obesity. That's not giving people a healthy body image. There's so much more to say (I'm very angry about this), but I can't find the right words…
flash77, I absolutely did not come here to brag about how small I am. I also said that it's not something I can help. There's another double standard. Bigger people are able to say "it's genetic" or "it's hard to lose weight" but it goes both ways.
Another thing, to say that big women are getting a little glory "for a change" is false. Look back at almost any other time period. I say thin women have been getting a little glory "for a change."
Also, punctuation makes you easier to understand
Abiesha, if you read the whole thing, I said that I could also be a size 4, it just depends on the brand. My boobs aren't enormous, but they're a decent size, I just have kind of narrow hips.
I want to clarify that I'm not trying to say anything bad about girls who are bigger, I just don't know why it's offensive to say "you're too fat" but not "you're too skinny."
I'm having trouble picking a best answer for this, so I'm going to leave it up to anyone who has voted on this (you guys all had good answers).

As plus women or simply average-sized ladies in a skinnier world, we know more than anyone that attitude makes or breaks our look of choice. If you’re a plus woman, then you’ve also probably spent some time concentrating on your self-esteem (and making it better). Confidence, as we all know, can get us through the toughest of times and the most misguided of outfits.

This weekend, I picked up the most recent issue of Town & Country, which had been sitting on my counter for a week or so. The special “Wonder Women” issue (Feb. 2010) was exactly what I needed to feel confident and lovely. The mag is jam-packed with profiles on powerful women, and you’ll feel better than ever if you take a look! Alas, there’s nobody of size profiled in it, but the interviews with amazing authors, artists, and fashion designers helped me avoid holding a grudge (*wink*).

Do you know anyone who carries themselves so well that you just think “wow”? Did you check out this issue of Town & Country?
